What is a Hip Replacement Surgery?

This surgery is done when your hip joint (or a part of it) is replaced with a metallic implant. It’s usually performed on adults after other treatments like weight loss; medicines and physical therapy have failed to help.

What are the types of surgery?

There are two major types of hip replacements:

• 1) Total hip replacement: A total hip replacement consists of replacing both the femoral head and the acetabulum with prosthesis.

• 2) Partial hip replacement: A partial replacement substitutes the femoral head only. This is typically done for elderly patients with limited or restricted activity.

How should you prepare before surgery?

Before surgery you will need to have a physical exam and preadmission testing and prepare you for your return after surgery. If you take blood thinners, or certain other types of medication, you'll need to stop taking them for a few days before you have your procedure.

How long does the surgery last?

The surgical procedure can be completed within two hours. To perform a hip replacement, the surgeon:

1) Makes an incision over the hip, through the layers of tissue.

2) Removes diseased and damaged bone and cartilage, leaving healthy bone intact.

3) Implants the replacement socket into the pelvic bone.

4) Inserts a metal stem into the top of the thighbone, which is then topped with a replacement ball.

How long will you have to stay in the hospital after surgery?

Hip replacement patients typically stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after surgery.Most patients are encouraged to walk with the aid of a walker or other assistive device. A physical therapist will teach patients how to move safely while protecting the new hip as it heals. Some people may be able to go home the same day of their surgery if their medical and surgical team feels it is safe to do so.

How often you will see your surgeon after the procedure?

Your surgeon will follow your care throughout your hospital stay. It is likely that you’ll see your surgeon, physician assistant or nurse practitioner several times while in the hospital recovering. You will also have a follow-up appointment at the orthopedic clinic two to four weeks after surgery.

How long does it take to make a complete recovery?

Recovery from a hip replacement varies from person to person, but most people are doing well three months after the surgery. High-impact activities, such as running or playing basketball, might be too stressful on the artificial joint. But in time, most people can participate in lower-impact activities — such as swimming, golfing and bicycle riding.
